What is Reiki? A Beginner's Guide to Energy Healing

Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is a form of energy healing that has garnered considerable interest for its gentle, non-invasive approach to wellness. At its core, Reiki means "universal life energy," and it’s a holistic practice that works with the body’s natural energy flow to help restore balance, support healing, and promote harmony for your mind, body, and spirit.

The Origins of Reiki

Reiki was developed in the early 1900s by Mikao Usui, a Japanese scholar. He wanted to create a healing practice that anyone could use, regardless of their beliefs. It’s widely accepted that Usui's own spiritual background was in esoteric traditions like Shingon, a form of Japanese Vajrayana Buddhism. This spiritual foundation, which is also the root of my own practice, is a key, often-missed part of Reiki's history.

After Usui, his students helped spread Reiki, and it was eventually introduced to the West, where it has become a widely respected complementary therapy used for relaxation and stress relief.

How Does a Reiki Session Work?

Reiki is based on the idea that a "life force energy" flows through all of us. When this energy becomes blocked or stagnant (often due to stress, anxiety, or trauma), it can manifest as physical or emotional issues.

A Reiki session’s goal is to help restore this flow. The process is simple and deeply relaxing:

  1. You lie fully clothed on a comfortable massage table.

  2. The practitioner takes a moment to centre themselves and set an intention for your healing.

  3. The practitioner then gently places their hands in a series of positions on or just above your body, acting as a channel for the energy.

The energy is not the practitioner's own; they are simply a conduit for the "universal life energy," which intelligently flows to where your body needs it most. People often describe the sensation as a soothing warmth, a gentle tingling, or simply a profound sense of peace and relaxation.

Because this energy isn't bound by physical location, it can be shared over any distance. I explain this in my article, Does Distant Healing Really Work?

What are the Benefits of Reiki?

Reiki is a holistic practice that supports your entire being. While many people first seek it out for stress, the benefits are often felt on multiple levels.

Emotional & Mental Benefits:

  • Stress & Anxiety Relief: This is the most common benefit. Reiki helps to calm the nervous system, quiet a racing mind, and bring you out of a "fight-or-flight" state.

  • Emotional Balance: It can help to gently release stuck emotions, providing a sense of stability and peace.

  • Enhanced Clarity: By calming the mental "clutter," many people feel a greater sense of focus and clarity after a session.

Physical Benefits:

  • Promotes Deep Relaxation: It allows your body to enter its natural "rest and digest" state, which is where all healing happens.

  • Supports Natural Healing: Reiki can help support your body's own healing abilities and is an excellent, non-invasive complementary therapy to traditional medicine.

  • Improved Sleep: Many clients report a significant improvement in their sleep quality after a session.

Spiritual Benefits:

  • Deeper Connection: Reiki can help you feel more connected to yourself, your intuition, and the world around you.

  • Promotes Growth: It is a wonderful tool for supporting personal development and self-awareness.

My Unique Approach: Usui Reiki & Ancient Tibetan Buddhist Healing

As a fully insured and UK Reiki Federation Master Practitioner, I am trained in the traditional Usui system described above, which is the beautiful foundation of my practice.

However, what makes my sessions unique is that I fuse this practice with Ancient Tibetan Buddhist Healing. This is a profound path rooted in my direct empowerments from my Tibetan Master, The Venerable Khenpo Jamyang Lekshey (one of the highest lamas in the Sakya lineage).

This means that in addition to the gentle flow of Usui Reiki, I am able to work with the specific, compassionate, healing energies of Enlightened Beings like the Medicine Buddha and Green Tara. This allows for a session of incredible depth and authenticity.

Your Path to Balance

Reiki is a simple, safe, and powerful practice with profound depth. It is not affiliated with any religion, so anyone can receive it.
