If you're feeling stressed, anxious, or just 'stuck', you've probably heard of Reiki. It’s a word that has become synonymous with gentle, hands-on healing and profound relaxation. And it is absolutely that.
But for many, the story of Reiki stops there. It’s often presented as a simple, modern wellness practice, disconnected from any deeper historical or spiritual roots.
What if the healing you can experience is even more profound? What if that gentle practice was just the tip of the iceberg, with a deep, authentic, and ancient foundation lying just beneath the surface?
The goal of this article is to explore the real, foundational roots of Reiki. As a practitioner of both Usui Reiki and Ancient Tibetan Buddhist Healing, I want to share how these two paths are not separate, but are in fact two streams from the same, powerful river.
The Hidden Roots of Usui Reiki
Most people are (rightly) taught that Reiki is a Japanese healing art, rediscovered and developed by Dr. Mikao Usui in the 1920s. It’s presented as a universal, non-religious practice, which it is. But this simple story misses a beautiful and vital piece of the puzzle: Dr. Usui himself.
Mikao Usui was a deeply spiritual man, a practitioner of Japanese esoteric Buddhism (such as Shingon or Tendai). This is a form of Vajrayana Buddhism. This ancient tradition, rich with empowerments, symbols, and connections to compassionate, enlightened energies, was the world Usui lived in. The foundation of Reiki, including its attunement process, its use of symbols, and its focus on channelling universal energy, is deeply inspired by these Vajrayana principles.
My Path: A Parallel, Authentic Lineage
My own healing journey began with the beautiful, foundational energy of Usui Reiki. But my path also led me to that same Vajrayana source.
I have been incredibly fortunate to receive direct empowerments in the Tibetan tradition from my root Lama, The Venerable Khenpo Jamyang Lekshey.
This isn't just a course; it's a direct, unbroken line of empowerments. Khenpo Lekshey is one of the highest lamas in his lineage and serves as the General Secretary of the main Sakya Monastery in Rajpur, India. His lineage, the Sakya lineage, is one of the four main, historic schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
To put this in context, many people are familiar with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who is from the Gelug school. He is respected as a spiritual guide for all four schools, which work together in harmony. This means the foundation of my practice is not a small, niche path, but a deep, authentic, and respected world tradition.
What is "Ancient Tibetan Buddhist Healing"?
This is where my practice becomes unique. My sessions are not "just" Reiki. They are a fusion of Usui Reiki and the Ancient Tibetan Buddhist Healing empowerments I have received.
What does this mean for you?
It means that during a session, I am not only a channel for the gentle, universal "life force" of Reiki. I can also work with the specific, compassionate, and powerful healing energies of Enlightened Beings, such as the Medicine Buddha for deep, profound physical and emotional restoration, or Green Tara for compassionate relief from fear and anxiety.
This is not a religious service, and you do not need to be Buddhist to receive it. It is a universal, compassionate energy, open to all. It simply means the "healing toolkit" we can use in your session is much, much larger. This universality is also why it can be shared powerfully across any distance, which you can learn more about in my guide to how Distant Healing works.
The Fusion: What This Means for Your Session
When you come for a session, you receive the best of both worlds.
I use the gentle, soothing structure of Usui Reiki to calm your nervous system, quiet a racing mind, and bring you into a state of deep, restorative peace.
Then, I weave in the Ancient Tibetan Buddhist Healing energies to work on a deeper level. This allows us to target specific energetic blocks or emotional weights with a focused, compassionate energy, helping you to release what no longer serves you.
To amplify this fusion, I also use ethically-sourced crystals, many of which I have personally selected on my travels to the Himalayas, placing them on the body to focus and enhance the healing vibrations.
Conclusion: Your Path, Your Practitioner
The most important part of any healing journey is finding a practitioner you trust. While all Reiki is beneficial, a session rooted in an authentic, unbroken lineage can offer a level of depth and support that is truly transformative.
I hope this has illuminated the beautiful, deep roots of this practice. It's not just a modern technique, but an ancient path. When you seek out a healer, I encourage you to ask about their lineage and their path. You deserve to find the one that resonates most deeply with you.
